Meet Some Successful Stories

Sophia

My name is Sophia and I was involved in a car accident when I was 14 years old which caused catastrophic injuries. I was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio, TX where I was admitted for a 12 week stay. During that time, I was told that I would be paraplegic. My world was turned upside down. I was in high school and like all high schoolers I was involved in many activities. I continued to push forward to learn what my new life would be like. My parents also continued to push forward researching what therapy I would be able to receive. We live in Eagle Pass, so I first started therapy at Valverde Regional Medical Center in Del Rio, TX. My Mom continued to ask questions and do research so I could receive the best care there was. Through Mom’s research she was put in touch with Dr. Morgan and the Charity Care Research Clinic. Starting in August 2023, my parents started to drive me 2.5-3 hours twice a week so I could work with Dr. Morgan. With the help of Dr. Morgan, I am now able to walk with the assistance of braces and crutches. I received help from the equipment called Locomotor Training Device that New Steps Initiative (NSI) was able to help fund the set up. Without the help of the equipment, I might not have been able to continue my dream of mobility. To help other patients with their dream of mobility I hope you will visit NSI’s donation page. All their funds help patients of the Charity Care Research Clinic along with helping Dr Morgan continue to build a larger clinic helping others who dream of mobility.

We are excited to share the news that Sophia has now graduated from high school! What an exciting time for Sophia and her family. All of us at NSI are happy for Sophia and look forward to seeing her continuing her journey.

In November of 2021, I was experiencing excruciating back pain. I ended up in the ER where they found a tumor encroaching my spine. During the biopsy procedure it was confirmed that it was Burkitt Lymphoma. After the procedure I was given the news that I had only a 1% chance of ever walking again. As if facing one of the most aggressive forms of cancer wasn’t hard enough, I now had to also face being paraplegic. Both chemotherapy and physical therapy were challenging. While continuing my routine of physical therapy I was introduced to Dr. Selina Morgan and the Charity Care Research Clinic. I informed Dr. Morgan that I was given a 1% chance of walking again. She told me, “You’re going to walk again.” Dr. Morgan helped me focus on stretching and fundamental movement of my legs. Then introduced me to the Locomotor Training Device. We began at a very slow pace but over time it increased. Today I am focused on walking with a walker and using a wheelchair. Both are helping me with working towards my dream of complete mobility. I do believe that miracles can happen. I also believe in the goal of New Steps Initiative in helping and assisting other patients achieve their goal of mobility.
